Takachiho Gorge (高千穂峡)

A gorge formed by rapid cooling of lava flowing in a belt shape along the Gokase River (五ヶ瀬川).

Takachiho Gorge (高千穂峡) was formed approximately 120,000 and 90,000 years ago during volcanic activity of Mount Aso, where lava flowed along the Gokase River (五ヶ瀬川) and rapidly cooled, creating a gorge in a belt shape along the river. The main cliffs, 80-100 meters high, continue for 7km. Designated as a scenic spot and natural monument in Japan in 1934, this gorge is also famous for being part of Japan's top 100 waterfalls and for landmarks such as "Manai no Taki (真真名井の滝)" and "Yaritobibashi (槍飛橋)." Visitors can rent boats to get close to "Manai no Taki waterfall" and enjoy well-maintained nature trails and a freshwater fish aquarium. It is also well-known as a popular spot for autumn foliage tourism.
